Unless we are all mad, there is at the back of the most bewildering business a story and if we are all mad, there is no such thing as madness. If I set a house on fire, it is quite true that I may illuminate many other people's weaknesses as well as my own. It may be that the master of the house was burned because he was drunk it may be that the mistress of the house was burned because she was stingy, and perished arguing about the expense of a fire-escape. It is, nevertheless, broadly true that they both were burned because I set fire to their house. That is the story of the thing. The mere facts of the story about the present European conflagration are quite as easy to tell. -- G.K. Chesterton

G.K.Chesterton has written an excellent book about how the Germans appear to the western world before and during the first world war. His insights into the German mind would especially ring true of the Third Riech and the Nazis. However I am still convinced that American involvement in the first world war was mistake.Product details

The Barbarism of Berlin Annotated G K Chesterton 9781533626639 Books Reviews
This is just a recitation of one man's anti German prejudices. He offers no evidence. Still, it reveals the mindset that allowed Europe to engage in ww1 and slaughter a generation while destroying a wide swath of Belgium and France. Now that the author died well before ww2; there is nothing here to help you understand THAT barbarism.
Another example of Chesterton's ability to deliver a clear and persuasive argument in clear and pleasurable prose. I'm not entirely comfortable with his position on a nation and its people, but he does support his indictment with compelling evidence. If one accepts Chesterton's definition of a barbarian power, Germany's most barbaric legacy, from Frederick II of the eighteenth century to William II of the twentieth, is making realpolitik seem an honorable because modern system of statecraft.
Great Transaction - would do business with again
This short, pithy, and witty piece written at the start of the First World War, could have, and should have been given to Chamberlain prior to going to Munich. Alas it was not, and the Second War was given the impetus to begin. Chesterton is a prophet. We lack such men today, who can provide substance as well as clever delivery.
I always enjoy any work by G K Chesterton. An amazing author! This book was very interesting and his perspective was right on... If you want to learn more about WWII, Hitler and his thugs and how they came into power this book will give you important insight. It may help you see the USA's precarious position at this time... History does repeat itself...especially if good men to nothing...
